Thought for the day: We write to discover who we are.

Thought for the day: We write to discover who we are.

In the movie, Shadowlands, Anthony Hopkins plays writer C.S. Lewis. In one scene, he tells his students, “We read to know we are not alone.” It’s a line that resonated with me then, and it still does.

I was thinking today about writing, and it occurred to me that if we read to know we are not alone, then we write to discover who we are.

Writing, like most artistic endeavor, is a journey of self-discovery–one that we then share with the world so that others can connect to it and discover community. Through the particular (self-expression), we connect with the universal (the recognition of and by the human tribe).

These are just my thoughts, obviously. Please feel free to share your thoughts about why you read and write!
