How falling in love with potential can actually be a good thing

Yesterday, Danielle LaPorte issued one of her simple and awesome TruthBombs. This one read: “Don’t fall in love with potential.” It really hit home for me.

I fall in love with potential all the time. It has wreaked havoc in my romantic relationships. Loving something that isn’t there but can be is like loving a mirage, and it has caused me considerable heartache.

But as a teacher, my propensity to fall in love with a student’s potential has helped me inspire young people to see their own possibilities and strive to create amazing realities for themselves.

I think that’s what most successful teachers, mentors, and coaches do. They fall in love with our potential and help us become that which we might be.

What about you? What’s your relationship to potential?
